Character Archetypes
1. The Hero- Buddy is the hero of this movie. He is the hero because he is the character that goes on the quest. His quest, is to travel to New York City, from the North Pole, to find his father, Walter Hobbs. Buddy's hamartia is that his father, Walter Hobbs, doesn't know he exists.
2. The Mentor- Santa is Buddy's mentor in the film. He mentors Buddy by guiding him to his father, and also taking Buddy in to live as an Elf, when Buddy was a young orphan child. Later in the film, Buddy repays Santa, by helping repair his sleigh after it crashed in New York City.
3. Companions- Michael, Buddy's "brother and Walter's son, is Buddy's main companion throughout the movie. Michael helps Buddy meet Jovie, Buddy's co-worker and future girlfriend, and they also go on some fun adventures through the mall and Central Park. Michael complete's the quest with Buddy.
4. The Alter Ego- Buddy is torn between being an elf, which he thought he was for 30 years of his life, and finally realizing that he is actually a normal human being. An example of this is when Buddy overhears two elves talking about how he is actually a human, and he faints. When he wakes up, everyone has to tell him that he isn't an elf, and that he is actually a normal person.
5. Woman as Goddess- Jovie, Buddy's girlfriend, is the woman as goddess in this film. She is the woman as goddess because she helps Buddy on his quest. She helps Buddy get Santa's sleigh working again when it crashes. The sleigh crashes because not enough people believe in Christmas, and Jovie went on her own and started getting people to sing carols, and got people to start really believing in Christmas again.
